Biography

Lydia Plybon was born 14 April 1804. The census records and her pension application all support 1803. But some researchers report the date was 14 April 1804. No source is available for 1804.

Lydia was the youngest daughter of John and Rebecca Plybon (Rebecca's maiden name is unproven). Her son, Ransom Plybon, was born on 23 Dec 1823, but she didn't marry her only husband, Thomas Divers, until 1830. She would have been about 20 years old when Ransom was born. He was born out of wedlock and his father was John Wesley Pasley (1797-1872). Both John and Lydia went on to marry other people: Lydia married Thomas Divers and John married Susannah Lumsden. The source of this information is direct descendants. John Wesley Pasley was the son of Robert Pasley and Sallie Forbes. They lived in Franklin County, Virginia.

She married Thomas Divers October 12, 1830 in Franklin County, Va., son of Christopher Divers and Lucy Smith. He was born March 14, 1796, and died November 12, 1848. Thomas Divers was the son of Christopher Divers and Lucy Smith.

Lydia lived on for another 30 plus years, ran the family farm, and apparently did that pretty well. Lydia was also a slaveowner. She apparently acquired slaves when her husband died but based on the demographics from the census returns, she must have bought or sold at least one slave herself.

Children of Lydia Plybon and Thomas Divers are:

  1. Rebecca Divers, b. 1831; d. Abt. 1897; married Daniel Perdue
  2. Christopher Divers, b. 1833, d. 1850
  3. Dewitt C. Divers, b. December 05, 1835; d. May 15, 1884, Franklin Co., VA
  4. Ann Elizabeth Divers, b. May 01, 1839, Franklin County, Va.; d. April 11, 1909; married Tyree T. Dillon
  5. Thomas C. Divers, b. September 11, 1840; d. December 16, 1905; married Sarah Perdue
  6. Sarah L. Divers, b. September 28, 1842; d. July 06, 1879; married William H. Hamner
  7. Isabella Divers, b. November 01, 1845; d. January 13, 1914; married Reed Sink
  8. Nancy C. Divers, b. 1848; married Henry C. Ridgeway

Thomas Divers had been a landowner when he died intestate. His land records are still being investigated. Lydia was a major buyer at Thomas' estate sale. Ransom Plybon was a buyer also and rented a portion of Thomas' land.

In 1878, Lydia appIied for a federal pension for her husband's service in the War of 1812. The information derived from that file: Lydia Divers was 75 years old at the time of her application; She married Thomas 12 October 1830, marriage performed by Moses Greer; Thomas died 12 November 1848; Thomas enlisted 29 March 1814 as a Private in Capt. William Jones Virginia Militia; Thomas was discharged 22 June 1814. Thomas re-enlisted, as a Private, 30 January 1815 in Capt. Eli Ferguson’s Co. of VA. Militia. Thomas was discharged 21 February 1815.

Lydia passed away around 1883. She was buried with husband Thomas in the Divers Cemetery on Inglewood Road near Burnt Chimney. Note that the FAG Memorial cited below has a photo of Lydia's tombstone but the inscriptions are totally illegible. The Memorial says she died 28 July 1882, which may be unlikely since she was a pensioner in 1883.

Stories

Family lore says that Lydia's first child, Ransom Plybon, was fathered by John Pasley. But John and Lydia never married. Each went on to marry others. The story says that John said some unkind things in the neighborhood about Lydia. As a result, Lydia refused to marry him.
