Peter (Schmidt) Smith was a North Carolina colonist.

Peter Smith was born on June 28, 1761 in Stanley, North Carolina Colony, the son of Wilhelm Schmidt and Mary Hannah Bratt.

Peter married Hannah, daughter of Boston Best, the pioneer, on 16 November 1784 in Stanley, North Carolina. They lived on the eastern fork of Hoyle's Creek near Stanley. Their home was located 200 yards east of a marker (see picture to the right) for this "PIONEER AND WIFE". Besides their dates of death and ages, this marker is engraved with "GUNSMITH FOR THE PATRIOTS". They both were buried there on their own farm in a private graveyard. Their graves are marked by modest marble slabs inscribed as follows:[1]
