Hi Mary, I really don't have much on Henry Clinton Smith. Just that he was a merchant in Cleveland and moved to MO. You know his younger brother moved to MO for a time. He returned home when he was older, but I bet some of his settled there. In case you don't have their names, they are: James M. Smith had a brother named Henry. They were born the same yr. 1829. Is that correct? They married sisters: James M. m. Sarah "Sallie" Artrip & Henry m. Mary "Polly" Artrip. Those Smiths sure loved the Artrips. ha. You tell me that your Henry m. a Cook. His sister Mary m. a Cook. Alden - Killed by Frank Smith at the Artrips. Fred - School Teacher Dewey - Minnie Mary b. 1856 Floyd b. 1857 Lived in Shell Branch, not far from home place. He moved to MO. Cowan Richard - lived in WVA m. Kiser, dtr of Rachel Kiser, he was a teacher too. There were other children. I have children of Richard Smith if you want them. He was married twice. My source is from Max Ervin, friend & neighbor & also LDS Library.

Thank you for the info on William Patton & Abel. I'm also a descendant of theirs as my grandmother Smith & grandfather were 3rd cousins. Laban Clark & Nannie Maida Smith.

Was a Merchant in Cleveland, Russell County, VA prior to moving to LCOOKC: Hi Mary LCOOKC: Did you get the letters yet? Icemom617: Hi Linda, I was just getting ready to do this! Icemom617: Yes, I got them yesterday. LCOOKC: good minds do run together hahaha Icemom617: I've been sick in bed with the flu for three days, so they really cheered me up! LCOOKC: must be a blood thing!!:-) LCOOKC: Sorry to hear that you are sick but glad they helped LCOOKC: I hadn't looked at them for so long not sure what all was there, do know some letters from Lake Icemom617: The letter from Rachel is just really something for me to have. I have some things from that side of the family but I think the only thing that I have from Rachel is a china cracker jar. LCOOKC: I think it's so intresting to see and hear the way they wrote and how they worded things Icemom617: Yes--there were a couple of letters from Aunt Lake. I sure wish we knew what Shirley and Kay's last names are. I can remember my mother talking about them, and I think I saw them once. LCOOKC: yes , i keep forgetting to ask my Aunt, that lives in Denver, I will write her right now and ask LCOOKC: Lake and my grandma were friends since birth, my moms mom Icemom617: It was also interesting how Uncle Edger just wrote to Doris after 60 years, and they just picked up right where they left off. LCOOKC: they both went from Wintersville to Denver, amazing LCOOKC: yes I thought so to Icemom617: I was curious about when Rachel lived in Oklahoma City. Do you know. LCOOKC: I think they moved there in about 1922, maybe 21 Icemom617: It was also interesting to see what Doris was writing about her own family. I knew some of that, but I guess I wasn't paying attention in those days. LCOOKC: or even 23, as the letter was written then but I think they had been there for awhile LCOOKC: yes thats true , we missed so much by not paying more attention, I did to, although I have always been a question asker and loved family stories and such haha Icemom617: I've told you that Doris' son, lives in Little Rock. He's getting ready to retire this spring. LCOOKC: I so hope we can meet someday soon. See if we have family likeness at all, my sister had more the Cook look,, I like my mom LCOOKC: If you get to Little Rock , it's not much more to drive here or even we could meet someplace Icemom617: I wonder what H.C. did for a living. Do you know? LCOOKC: I think I told you how my sister looks so much like the pic of Rachel you sent me, when she was young Icemom617: I would love to see you too and see where they all lived. Maybe my sister and I will drive to Chicago again. LCOOKC: not really, I think he farmed while in Wintersville and I think he died much earlier than her, do you know his death year Icemom617: My Grandfather Smith gave his looks to the boys in my family. A couple of cousins have it, and sometimes I see it in my oldest son. Icemom617: I have that he died in1914, so he would already have been gone. LCOOKC: it is very cold here now, and the wind was horrible yesterday so felt like 5 below 0 LCOOKC: I was thinking he died the year that my grandparents, Geo and Nancy came to Mo and that was 1914 Icemom617: Rachel died on June 17, 1930. I can remember my mother commenting on the fact that I was born on her birthday--June 17, 1939. LCOOKC: I think DK, Rachel, and Nan came about the same time which i believe was 1911, then George came in 1914 Icemom617: There were several of his brothers who went to Missouri from Virginia. Have we talked about that? LCOOKC: isn't that something, she and my grandmother Auxier died the same year LCOOKC: well the only one I know that came was Jake LCOOKC: and he came to Milan close to Wintersville Icemom617: I have in the bio from Henry that he had a general store in Wintersville. Do you know if it's still there? The building I mean. LCOOKC: I know you probably have lots more info than I do, I just have whats been passed to me from family, mostly Icemom617: And the amazing thing is that you remember it all!! LCOOKC: Yes I do remember now that he was in the store with DK, then Dk went ahead and kept the store after Henrys death LCOOKC: well my memory use to be great buttttttttt it is slipping anymore haha LCOOKC: It is so good to talk with you and I want to more, when you can. We are going to my cousins for dinner and I am taking pies , so have to get them made Icemom617: I will send you an email with what I have about the brothers. It won't fit on here.

LCOOKC: so glad you got the letters and enjoy Icemom617: OK. Thank you so much again. LCOOKC: ok that would be great Icemom617: Bye LCOOKC: talk soon :-) bye bye

Deed for property in Russell County Replies: 0 Deed for property in Russell County Posted: 17 Jul 2010 4:34PM

Classification: Query Surnames: Smith, Cook, Mills, Artrip, Campbell, Elliott, Parsley, Counts, Kiser Ran across some deeds from the late 1800's today in a box of old papers. Thought I'd share as there are names besides my ancestors' on them.

My great grandfather is Henry Clinton Smith. He was the Sheriff of Russell County around the turn of the Century. He and his wife, Rachel Almira Cook and her father D. K. (Doctor Kanan) Cook, seemed to buy and sell a lot of property. The following deed is handwritten in ink on a legal pad piece of paper (two pages). I love the plat description. I would also love to know where it is now. I know that my great grandparents had a white house on the Clinch River. When I went there a few years ago hoping to find it, what I found were dozens of "white houses" on the Clinch River. I just had to laugh when I saw them all. My aunt and uncle had been there in the 1970's, and they thought they found the house. They said it had been moved up higher on the hill to keep it from flooding. When they asked about the Cooks, a storekeeper said, "Oh the hills are full of them!"

"This deed made this the 20th day of July 1897 between Jacob Minnick and Margerette L. Minnick his wife of the County Russell and State of virginia of the first part, and H. C. Smith and D. K. Cook of the County and State aforesaid of the second part: Witnesseth that for and in consideration of the sum of ($125) one hundred and twenty- five dollars to them in hand paid the reciept [sic] whereof is hereby acknowledged the parties of the first part doth bargain grant and sell unto the parties of the second part, and by this deed conveys unto them a parcel or tract of land lying and being in the county and state aforesaid and situated on the north side of Clinch River and is bounded as follows: Beginning at a sycamore on the north bank of Clinch River running north up the hill to a cedar and maple on top of the ridge thence west to a hickory on top of a spur [not sure about that word], thence west along the top of ridge to a white oak a corner between Micchael Kelley and Noah Kiser (deceased) thence south down the hill to a cedar on the banks of the river thence up the said river with its meanderings to the beginning, said to contain 7 acres be the same more or less. The parties of the first part doth convey all of their interest right--and title to the parties of the second part in said land, with all of the appertenances to hold to them forever. And they hereby warrant the title to the same to the said parties of the second part against the claims of all persons whomsoever.
