Biography

During the War of 1812, Samuel Smith served as a private in the 5th Lincoln Militia. In his diary, Samuel claimed that he was on guard duty on the river, at age 17, at Queenston, spotted the American boats, and gave the alarm. He was one of a few men chosen from Capt. Samuel Hatt’s Company to join Capt. William’s 49th British Regulars at the Battle of Queenston Heights on October 13th.

He served from September 25 to December 16, 1812 in Captain Samuel Hatt’s Flank Company. [1]

He served from May 25 to May 31, 1813 in Captain Israel Dawdy’s Detachment. [2]

He served on October 6, 1813 in Captain Peter Bowman’s Company. [3]

On March 24, 1814, a Samuel Smith was appointed a commissioner with the power to “secure and detain” persons suspected of “treasonable adherence to the enemy.” [4]

From June 19 to 28, 1814, he was employed falling timber at Burlington with Captain Peter Bowman’s Company. [5]

In 1820, militia land grants became available to veterans of the 1812 flank companies but Samuel did not apply for his grant at that time.

On May 1, 1837, Samuel Smith, a former private in a flank company of the 5th Lincoln, claimed 100 acres and was located on the south half of Lot 12, Con. 12, Howard Twp. by Col. Talbot. [6]

On September 18, 1857 died in Euphemia Twp., Lambton Co. and was buried on his homestead. He had been an explorer, a surveyor, a businessman, and a politician.

Samuel Smith[7] (1795-1857) was the husband of Sarah Holmes.[8]
