William was living at home with his parents in New Salem, Union County, North Carolina when the 1900 Census was taken. He was recorded as son, born Oct 1889, age 10, attended school for 3 months, could read and write. Enumerated with him were Jacob, head, born April 1870, age 30, married 11 years.; Mary, wife, born January 1875, age 25, married 11 years, 5 children, 5 living; Della (Oct 1891); Edgar (Dec 1893); Lonnie (Sept 1886); and Ettie (May 1899)[2]
On 29 December 1908, W. H. Smith of New Salem, 19 year old son of Jacob Smith and M. S. Smith of New Salem, appeared before the Union County Register of Deeds to obtain a license to marry Beedie D Mullis of New Salem, 19 year old daughter of W. H. Mullis and S. E. Mullis also of New Salem. All four parents were living at the time the license was issued. The couple was married the same day by M. L. Flow, Justice of the Peace, in Monroe, Union County, North Carolina.[3]
