Biography

Alliance Standard March 19, 1893 Linden, TX "From Hughes Springs" Bro. H. G. Smith one of the oldest Baptist preachers we have had died last Friday on the 17th. He leaves many friends and relatives to mourn his departure.:

State of Alabama on the 27th Day of March A.D. one thousand eight hundred and fifty County of Tallapoosa. Five personally appeared before me Justice of the Pearce within and or the County aforesaid, Henry G. Smith aged 35 years a resident of Tallapoosa County of the State of Alabama, who being duly sworn according to the law, declares that he is the identical person who was a private in the Company commanded by Captain Ellis of the Regiment of Georgia Militia commanded by Col. Story in the war with the Cherokee Indians in 1838 for the term of three months and continued actual service in the said war for fourteen days, that he has heretofore made application for Bounty Land under act of Sep 28, 1850 and received a land warrant 07527 for 40 acres which he has since legally disposed of and cannot return. Henry served in the Henry County GA Volunteers during the Cherokee War and received a land bounty for his service in AL on July 9, 1853. The northwest quarter of the southeast quarter of section 18 in township 23 range 26:

He also served as Pvt. Co. B 37 AL Inf. during the Civil War.

Baptist Minister. Last known church was Springhill Baptist Church, Titus, TX. He is buried in Hickory Hill Cemetery. Online transcriptions of church records listed him as Henry C. "Elder."

Another census says he was born in Chester, SC.. and so, he could have been born in England, Ireland or anywhere else but was recorded here by heresay.
