Biography

William’s grandson, Robert Wharton (b 1818), named his maternal grandparents, William Smith and Catherine Robinson Smith, in a letter of 8 Aug, 1904 addressed to LeRoy P. Wharton. He further states that they were natives of Maryland and that William was of Welsh descent and that Robinson was of English descent.

Although there is another Mary Ann Smith, daughter of William and Catherine in neighboring vicinities, Robert’s letters should put to rest the alternate theory of Mary Ann’s parentage.

A resident of Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania, he enlisted Feb. 1, 1777 and served as private in Capt. Uriah Springer's Company and in Col. John Gibson's Virginia Regiment in the American Revolution. He was discharged July 25, 1783.

William participated in the Indian Wars from 1794-95 and helped build Fort Greenville, Ohio. In the victorious battle under Gen. Anthony Wayne, he had bullets shot through his clothes.[1]

William was living in Washington Co., Pennsylvania in 1797.

The Smiths settled in Morgan Co., Ohio about 1817. Daughter Mary Ann married John Wharton in nearby Guernsey County, 26 Jan 1818.

William was placed on the pension roll in 1819 for six years service as a private in Virginia Continental Line. His application was executed Dec.30, 1819 in Hamilton Co., Ohio. A large family is referred to but no names are given.[2]Pension claim No. S-40465 from Adjutant General's Dept-Soldiers' Claims, State House, Columbus, Ohio.[3]

In 1828 he was living in Rush Co., Indiana. Two minor grandchildren (children of a son of the soldier) are referred to in 1838 (1828?). Their names are not stated, and there is no further data on file as to family[4]
