John Jr. was the eldest son of John "Sailor" Smith Sr. and Annah Maria Short. He was born in New York State in 1825. He was one of 7 children.
He married Mary Reynolds on July 30, 1848. They had one son, Irving John Smith in April, 1849, who became a minister in New York State.
John Jr. died at the age of 25 in December, 1850. He is buried at the Old Liberty Cemetery, Liberty, Sullivan County, New York, USA. The tombstone inscription reads: In memory of JOHN D. SMITH who died Dec. 5, 1850 AE 25 Y'rs
