Biography

Flag of Suffolk (adopted 2017)
Frederick (Balls) Smith was born in Suffolk, England.

Frederick was born on December 19, 1856 under the name of "Alfred Edhouse Balls". He was the illegitimate son of Frederick Edhouse (later Smith) and Maria Balls. His father was married to a woman named Mary Ann Ranson, but by 1857 his father had abandoned her and was living with Maria. Members of the Ranson family discovered the couple living together in 1860 and they fled to Peterborough and assumed the name of "Smith".

In the 1861 census Frederick (age 4) was the son of Frederick Smith in Peterborough, Northamptonshire, England.[1]

Frederick's father established a successful ketchup and mushroom soup factory in Peterborough, eventually known as F. Smith & Sons. But Frederick himself would become estranged from his family and the business, due to giving away the recipe to a man named Ellington.

Frederick married Betsy Cannon Smith on November 3, 1878. They had at least eight children; Jane, Frederick, Martha, Alfred, Ernest, Albert, William and Joseph.

He died on June 10, 1909. He was buried with his wife at Broadway Cemetery, Peterborough, but was not interred in the family vault.

Frederick was born in 1857. He was the son of Unknown Smith. He passed away in 1909.[2]
