Reginald Dow Smith was born in Marshall County, Kentucky in 1893 to William Henry Smith and Mary Elizabeth Bolen. He was a physical fitness advocate. He entered military service 23 Jun 1918 and was inducted Into Co H, 154th Infantry, US Army. He was transferred on 13 Sep 1918 to Co D, 125th Infantry, part of the 32nd Division, as a Private. The 32nd Division fought in the concluding battle in France in World War 1 at Meuse-Argonne while he was part of it. He married Maggie Bell Nash (1901–1980). They had sons Vastine (1928-2011) and Velvin (1926-2011).
He was intelligent and enterprising, operating several types of businesses including a resort at Reelfoot Lake in Tennessee, grocery stores in Calvert City and Old Gilbertsville, KY, and bait farms and real state developments in Gilbertsville, KY near Kentucky Dam. In his later years, he frequently wrote letters to Western KY newspapers on the topics of politics and religion. He died in Illinois in 1981.[1]
