Biography

As a father of Michael, who probably did not exist, Adam first appears in the myth's most complex 19th-century version with the publication of an enormous work compiled by Walter Copinger in 1907.

Note of caution

This profile is currently connected to what the great genealogist J H Round called the "The Carington Imposture", a famous genealogical myth connecting modern Smith families to the medieval Caringtons. At least some of the people in that pedigree never existed and others are represented inaccurately. Further information:

Research notes

In Helsby's 2nd edition of Ormerod's History of Cheshire, a record is is said to exist from approximately 1191, which could match this person.[1] It is suggested by the pedigree there that Adam is father of William de Carington.

Copinger pp.12ff claims that the following sources exist, and they look real, but each should be confirmed:

  • witness to a grant made in 1170 by Hamo, second Baron of Dunham Massy to the Priory of Mobberley. [Copinger cites Charters of Mobberley Priory, No. 18.]
  • "In the year 1189 Adam de Carinton granted and sold to Adam de Dutton, Seneschal of Blackburn, second son of Sir Hugh de Dutton, of Dutton, knt., and ancestor of the Warburtons of Arley, Cheshire, " tota medietate de Sala" (full half of the Parish of Sale, near Manchester) to be held of the fee of the Constable of Cheshire, by rendering annually one pound of cumin seed, two silver marks, and one horse in recognition thereof. This deed is still in the possession of Piers Egerton Warburton, of Warburton and Arley, Cheshire." [Copinger cites Arley Charters, Box 1, No. 45 ; also Arley Charters, Box 1, No. 30. Ormerod, v. 1, p.563]
  • "He was witness to a grant about 1190 from Roger Walter, Abbot of Cockersand, and his convent, to Thomas de Horrebi3 of one-fourth part of Bollin Mill, in the parish of Lymme, and also of half a bovate of land in Huterington (about 14 acres in Oughtrington), which Kenwric held, rendering five shillings a year, and half a mark as an obit." [Copinger cites Arley Charters, Box 1, No. 30]
  • "Again, he was witness to a deed of gift at the same time from Hamo de Mascy to Henry fil Robert (de Ashley) for his homage and service, of one bovate of land in "Asselche," the same that Uhtred held, being a fourth part of the whole vill (of Ashley)." [Citing Ormerod, v. 1., p.555]
  • "And about 1200 was witness to a deed by which Adam, son of Robert de Dutton the younger, released all his right in a moiety of Bollinton to Richard, son of Gilbert de la Quicke" [Citing Charter of John de Mere. Harl. MSS. 2077, f. 96 b.] [Note: Roger appears to have been abbot of Cockersand after 1199. See https://www.british-history.ac.uk/vch/lancs/vol2/pp154-159#h3-0003 ]
