Biography
Herman Barton Smoot was born March 9, 1878 in Piedmont, Wayne County, Missouri. His parents were Harvey & Saphronia Smoot.
The 1880 Census of Logan, Wayne County, Missouri, shows the family, consisting of Harvey Smoot - age 36, who was born in Ohio; his wife, Saphronia - age 27, born in Missouri; their sons Mason - age 12, born in Missouri, and Herman - age 1. (Because of the age difference in Mason & Herman, I believe that Mason may have had a different mother.)
In the 1900 Census they are in the Black River Township, Wayne County, Missouri. Herman's mother has died - his father, Harvey, is listed as 'widowed'. This census has Harvey's birthplace as Illinois. The family now consists of Harvey - age 54; Hermon - age 21; Gracia Smoot - age 13; Alma Smoot - age 11; and Harvey's brother, Mason Smoot - age 32.
Herman is married in the 1910 census. He probably married in 1900. He and his family were living in Williams, Wayne County, Missouri. Herman - age 31 & his wife, Sarah - age 26 are with their 4 children: Bessie - age 10, Raymond - age 7, Alta - age 5, and Opal - age 2.
In the 1920 census, Herman is widowed. He is living with his brother, Mace (probably Mason) and his family in Logan, Missouri. His children are not with him.
In the 1940 census, Herman has remarried. He - age 61 and his wife, Alma - age 48, are living in Patterson, Wayne County, Missouri. Alma died on July 10, 1944.
On December 14, 1944, Herman Smoot of Patterson, Missouri, married Mary Foreman in Clay County, Arkansas.
On December 9, 1946, Herman Smoot of Patterson, Missouri, married Autlee Montgomery in Randolph County, Arkansas. Margaret Autlee Smoot died on June 16, 1952, in Poplar Bluff, Butler County, Missouri.
No record has yet been found of Herman's death or burial.
