Johana Smyth was a daughter of John Smyth of Cold Norton, Essex.[1]
The identity of her mother is uncertain.
The entry in the Visitation of Essex of 1552[1] stated that William Harres of 'Sudemeset' esq. married Johan'a Smyth, daughter of John Smyth of Norton and by her had issue William son and heir, Richard 2nd son, Felice married to Bartylmew Averell of London, and Susane married to John Ayloff son and heir of Sir John Ayloff, knight. After, the said William Harrys married to his second wife Joane daughter to Cooke of Bockynge and had issue by her Arthur Harrys. Thirdly the said William married Anne daughter of Rutter of London and had issue by her Edward and Christopher. William Harreys son and heir to William Harrys of Sudmeste married Jane daughter of Semer of 'Brawginghe' and they had issue William Harrys son and heir.
The entry in the 1558 Visitation of Essex in which she was recorded as Joane Smithe, expanded that of the 1552 Visitation but there were also some differences.[2]
In the will of her father John Smyth of Cold Norton, Essex, in 1524[3] the Testator bequeathed the residue of his goods to "my sonne in lawe William Harrys" whom he also made his Executor. Johanna was not mentioned in the will.
Lands in Cold Norton came into the possession of William Harris and were later disputed by two of his sons, William and Vincent.[4]
At All Saints Maldon, Essex, there was a monument to their son William Harris.[5] "Besides some of the arms which I have already noted as still extant, the following monuments and arms are recorded in Harl MS. 4944, which have been since destroyed .... William Harris, son of William Harris and Jane his wife, which William died 14th May, 1559. Per pale on a chevron engrailed between 3 wolves heads, a lozenge between 2 fish respecting."
In the will of John Smyth of Cold Norton his wife was named Margery.
