Biography

Born on 23 March 1634, Philip Smythewas theeldest son of Thomas, 1st Viscount Strangford of Westenhanger and his wife, Lady Barbara Sydney daughter of Robert Sydney, 1st Earl of Leicester. He succeeded his father as Viscount Strangford on 30 June the following year.

On 22 August 1650, he married his cousin. Lady Isabella Sydney daughter of Robert Sydney 2nd Earl of Leicester. (They were both grandchildren of Robert Sidney and his wife, Barbara Gamage). They had an only child, a daughter, before Isabella's death in 1663. By license dated 14 November the same year he married Mary Porter, daughter of George Porter and his wife, Diana Goring. There were five sons and 3 daughters born in this marriage. He was returned to Parliament as member for Hythe in 1660.

Philip died in August 1708 leaving his family almost destitute.
