ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHY AND SOURCES

  • 1. S. T. Snead, Letter from S. T. (Saylor) Snead to Henry Snead, Jr. dated 8 Sep 1946., Eric Henderson's family records.
  • "Letterhead reads: S. T. Snead, Consulting Accountant, Woodward Building, Washington 5, D. C,.
  • Letter is dated Sept. 8, 1946.
  • Text of Letter is:
  • Dear Henry:
  • Referring to our conversation when at Emmett's last Sunday night, and the following morning about the Snead genealogy record I have, entitled "The Sneads of Fluvanna," I am giving you below some information I think will be of interest to you. Of course you would not have known any of this was in the book when you looked through it in the Congressional Library. In fact you would not have had any idea that you were in the book in any way. However, you are in there all right on page 112, and the name is given as "Carey" Snead. The correct way of spelling it is Cary. I was wrong at the time I gave it to Mrs. Hatcher in the spelling as Carey, or was a misprint that was not caught when proof reading.
  • The sons of Cary Snead, who would be your great-great grandfather are listed in the book as follows: William, John, Albert and Sam. The John Snead in this list is my Grandfather and your great-grandfather. That is, he was my father's father and your father's grandfather.
  • ANOTHER PERSON'S HANDWRITTEN NOTATION IN MARGIN:
  • daughters, Mary S. Ramsey and Susan S. Fitzgerald
  • William, Albert and Sam were grandfather John M. Snead's brothers. And he had two sisters, one was named Mary and the other was named Susan. The M. in grandfather's name stands for Matthew. He was born Feb. 5, 1832 [the 2 is crossed off in writing and a 5 written next to it], and died Sept. 9, 1910. Albert was killed in an accident in young manhood at a saw mill, and there were no children from his line. Sam Snead died not long after the Civil War as a result of disease and exposure contracted in prison during the war. He was married and had three children that I know of, two sons and one daughter. The sons were Doc. Snead, we called him, and the other boy was called Mat. which perhaps was short for Matthew. The daughter married Dawson Fitzgerald on Rockfish. William left Nelson County as I heard my grandfather say and went back down in the part of the country where his folks came from when they moved up into Nelson. Grandfather told me that as a boy. I went to see Uncle William in the spring of 1902. He was very old and did not live long after that. He lived in Louisa County, which joins Fluvanna. His home was six miles from railroad and the station was Cobham, which is below Charlottesville toward Richmond. It was out in what was called the Green Springs section and was very nice country.
  • Uncle William (my great uncle) had three sons and one daughter. Italic textThis is an incomplete list. The sons names were Chapman, the oldest, then Eugene, then the daughter called Willie, and Emmett, the youngest son. I met all of them except Chapman. He lived in King William County out from Richmond and operated saw mills. He was waylaid and killed and robbed by a negro in 1905. The negro was caught and hung.
  • My recollection is that grandfather told me his sister Mary married a Ramsey who lived in Amherst County, and that is all I know about her. His sister Susan married Sexton Fitzgerald. There were four sons as follows: Riley, Robert, Albert and Jacob- the latter called Jake. That would make them grandfather Snead's nephews and a first cousin of my father and your grandfather. Jake was Martha's father, my half-brother Oda's wife. They were 2nd cousins. That is Oda and Martha were second cousins, as we call relationship of that designation.
  • Cary's Snead's father was named Randall. I am not certain about Cary's brothers or about any of his father's brothers. Mrs. Dr. Hatcher believed that Randall's father was named Archibald. I think she got that idea from an old will record.
  • Going back a bit I will give you a little more about Cary Snead. He fought in the war of 1812, volunteered and enlisted at Waynesboro, Va. I have an idea that he walked from on Tye River to Waynesboro and volunteered. His commanding officer was a Col. Coleman. He was in the infantry, and his company was Company C. A queer coincidence, my brother John Snead was in the infantry, Company C, 26th Infantry, First Army Division in World War #2.
  • Cary Snead was married not long after he was released from the Army. He married a Miss Lucy Hatter. [[Editor’s note: Other records indicate that he married Mary “Polly” Hatter, instead, and that it was his brother, James, who married Lucy Hatter.] ] The minister was Uncle Marion Coffey's grandfather Parson Henry Coffee, he was called. The license was obtained at Lovingston, Va. in 1815- I have forgotten the month and day, and do not have the information before me at this time.
  • Along about 1850 the Congress passed an Act giving land grants to the soldiers of the War of 1812. Cary Snead made application for a grant of land and was given a number of acres (I have forgotten the amount) there in Nelson County. If you happen to know the area at all, it was located about 1/3 the way from what is called the fork of the river near Evergreen Church, not far from Crabtree Falls, and where Campbell's creek flows into the Tye River, which is right near where Long Hatter lives. Cary Snead is buried near the Fork of the River and L. A. ownes [sic] the land and the old cemetery. Jake Fitzgerald showed L. A. where Cary Snead is buried. You see Cary Snead was Jake's grandfather.
  • Grandfather's mother died during the Civil War, but his father Cary Snead lived some years after and I think died about 1875, and Jake lived near there and remembered his grandfather's death and where he was buried. L. A. bought the land about five years ago and plans to fix up the old cemetery. He and I went up to this last April when I was up to visit my sister who married Bruce Nash and lives near Tyre [Tyro?], and whom you undoubtedly know.
  • Cary Snead married again after his first wife's death, a Fitsgerald, named Elizabeth M. Fitzgerald, and Bruce's grandfather Daniel Nash was a witness to the application for a pension Elizabeth M. Snead filed after Cary's death. I got this information from the old War Records here in Washington, Cary Snead's application for the grant of land was signed by two of his sons, grandfather John and Sam Snead, according to the old war records, I think the date was about 1852 of the application for the grant. That is his sons were witnesses to the application.
  • I find it is getting late and I will have to give you what I know about grandmother Snead another time. I do not have much of her record. She told me she was born there on Back Creek where Charley Campbell use to live. Your father will know where that is or was if the old house no doubt is gone. I will let you have this book some week end when you go home if you would like. Remember me to your mother and sister. Your dad will no doubt be interested in the contents of this letter.
  • Sincerely yours,
  • SAYLOR
  • S. T. Snead

  • Handwritten notation: "Cary Snead is buried near the Fork of the River (Tye) and L. A. () ownes (sic) the land and the old cemetery...L.A. (Leonard) bought the land about 5 years ago (1941 based on the 8 Sep. 1946 date of the narrative) and plans to fix up the old cemetery."
  • 2. Pension Application File of Elizabeth M. Snead, second wife and widow of Cary Snead, War of 1812 Service. Served as a private in the company commanded by Robert L. Coleman in the 8th Regiment of the Virginia Militia, which was commanded by General John H. Cocke. He was a substitute for one John Bowls, who was drafted.. He served from about August 1, 1814 to February 22, 1815 when he was honorably discharged at Camp Carter, Virginia. He received bounty land in the 1850's for his service in the War of 1812. Bounty land grants described as "Tbt.(?) 53197-80-'50" and "Tbt.(?) 12652-80-'55", which probably translates to the grant identifying number, the number of acres, and the year of the act that provided for the land grants. Marriage license indicates that he was 70 years old on the date of the marriage, December 8, 1870, and that his occupation was farmer.
  • 3. Census, Nelson County, VA, 1830. Cary appears as HOH in the 30-39 age bracket with female of the same age and the following young males and females: 1 male age 5-9, 1 male under 5, 1 female age 5-9 and 1 female under 5.
  • 4. Census, Nelson County, VA, 1840. HOH. One male under 5, 2 males 5 to 9, 2 males 15 to 19, and one male (himself) 40 to 49. One female under 5, 2 females 5 to 9, 2 females 10 to 15, 1 female 15 to 19 and 1 female 40 to 49. Four male slaves and 8 female slaves.
  • 5. Census, Nelson County, VA, 1850. HOH. Household consisted of himself (age 50, occupation farmer, value of real estate $100, place of birth Virginia, could not read or write.), Polly (age 50, place of birth Virginia), Louisa (age 20, place of birth Virginia), John (age 15, place of birth Virginia, and school attendee within a year of the census), Alfred (probably Albert, age 11, place of birth Virginia, and school attendee within a year of the census), and Marion (age 10, place of birth Virginia, and school attendee within a year of the census).
  • 6. Census, Nelson County, VA, 1860. HOH, age 60 (hard to read), occupation farmer, entries for value of personal and real property not legible. Polly appears to be 60 or 62. Louisa appears to be 30. Filander is listed as age 10. A six year boy whose first name is illegible and whose middle initial appears to be the letter I completes the household.
  • 7. Census, Nelson County, VA, 1870. Age 70, occupation farm manager, value of personal and real property is $200 each, unable to read. Household also included a James (age 38) and a Margaret (age 45) whose lastnames are unclear. Perhaps she is a daughter?.
  • 8. Marriage Certificate for Cary Sneed and Elizabeth M. Fitzgerald. Identifies Cary as son of Randolph and Dicey.

BIRTH:

  • 9. Marriage Certificate for Cary Sneed and Elizabeth M. Fitzgerald. Nelson County had not been formed at his birth. Probably indicates the area of Amherst County that was his birthplace.

DEATH:

  • 10. Pension Application File of Elizabeth M. Snead, second wife and widow of Cary Snead, War of 1812 Service. August 15, 1972 on one affidavit of applicant, June 6, 1871 on another.
