Garland was the first son born to Absolum in Georgia after his marriage to Dianah in 1839. Named after his great great grandmother. Moved from Forsyth County to Fayette County in Georgia during the 1840s. As a young teen Garland moved with his remaining family to Cherokee County Alabama to include his brother James who was 4 years older. The two oldest boys stayed in Georgia and later fought in Georgia Brigades during the war.
Garland was sick in Cherabusco Hospital of debility from July 23-Aug 16, 1862. He died of typhoid fever at Camp Winder Hospital in Richmond on Dec 20 after being admitted on Dec 19, 1862.
