Biography

In Brief
Catherine Unknown, commonly said to have been Snyder/Snider, was born about 1760 (census data resolves to a range 1755 - 1765),[1] and she died about 1812 (1810–1818. She was living when Martin executed the deed in 1807 and seems to be recorded in the 1810 census, but he re-married in 1818. Perhaps she died in 1812 and that gave rise to the apparent error in McNary Family, which incorrectly asserts that her husband Martin McNary died that year).[2]

She married Martin McNary, as his first wife, about 1780 (the given name of Martin's then wife, Catherine, appears on the 1807 Deed; According to the Indiana DAR, and also the McNary Family book, she was Kate Snider).[2] He was the son of Martin McKenery and Elisabeth Bettis, born about November 1756 (in an affidavit dated 18 June 1823, Martin McNary stated his age as 66 years and 7 months, thus born Oct - Nov 1756. The 1800 census shows the oldest male at 45+, i.e. born 1755 or earlier),[3] and he died at Philipstown, Putnam County, New York on 8 August 1825.[4]

Residence History
She was living at Fishkill, Dutchess County, New York in 1800,[1] and in 1810.[5]

Family

Children of Martin and Catherine (Snider?) McNary (some uncertain):

  1. Anna Maria McNary, born in New York about 1781 (birth year estimated from census data. Birth place from the 1880 census of her supposed daughter, Maria (Soden) Schofield).[6]
  2. Martin A McNary, born in Dutchess County, New York about 1782 (calculation from GSI give 8 Mar 1785; but 1850 & 1855 census are both consistent with 1782; the three earliest, 1810 - 1830, suggest even earlier, not later than 1780).[7]
  3. Daniel McNary, born in Dutchess County about 1783 (estimated from census data).[8]
  4. Elizabeth McNary, born about 1785 (estimated from census data).[9]
  5. Matthew McNary, perhaps; born about 1788 (W. P. McNary is the only known source for this name; birth year estimated from analysis of census records).[10]
  6. Jane McNary, perhaps; born about 1791 (W. P. McNary is the only known source for this name; birth year estimated from analysis of census records).[11]
  7. Joseph McNary, born about 1793 (estimated from census data).[12]
  8. John McNary, born in Dutchess County about 1796 (his parentage is assumed from the details of his birth given in the 1855 census; no other candidates for his parents are known in 1799 Dutchess County).[13]

Research Notes

Some online trees assert, without evidence, that Catherine and Martin married in Connecticut, sometimes giving a supposed exact date and place. No evidence can be found to support these claims. Further, if she was indeed nee Snider, she could not have been from Connecticut: there are no 18th-century records of that surname ever having occurred in Connecticut. There were Snyder families in the Hudson Valley, but no connection to any of them has yet been established.

Rejected Information

Death: ABT 1816, Gravenhurst, Bedfordshire, England; "Source": Footnote: Betty Fink Communication 1997; there is no evidence that connects this Mrs. Catherine McNary to any event in England, and this information is rejected as spurious.
