Biography

It has been said that Peter was the son (or possibly the grandson?) of one Christian Schneider (born c1710 in Switzerland; died c1793 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania) and there is a bit of circumstantial evidence to substantiate this statement.

On Sept 18th (OS) 1732, a group of Palatines arrived in the Port of Philadelphia on The Johnson Galley including one "Christian Sneyder" and a family of Mommas/Mummas (spelled Moomaw in Virginia) that included Christian Moomaw's paternal great-grandfather and grandfather. The Mommas settled in Earl Twp., Lancaster Co., PA and Schneider settled in the same county.

In an email from Bob Moomaw to Doug Mumma (Moomaw/Mumma family researchers) that speaks to the continuing relationship between Mommas/Moomaws and Schneiders/Sniders/Snyders, Bob Moomaw wrote:

"John C. Moomaw of Falling Spring, VA wrote Frank Ray Moomaw in 1942: 'In 1804 Christian Moomaw (my great grandfather [Joseph's father]) bought 99 acres on Tinker Creek, near Amsterdam from Peter and Susannah Snider for $1,419. In 1810 he bought 93 acres on Tinker Creek near Amsterdam from Peter and Susannah Snider of Paxton Township, Ross Co., Ohio for $643.44. (Note) This [the land on Tinker Creek near Daleville] is what is called the old Moomaw place. My grandfather Benjamin F. Moomaw [brother of Joseph] was born there in 1814. I always thought that Peter Snyder was Christian's father in-law but did not know it until . . . .'" PPH 20120827

ID: I156537
Name: Peter Snider
Given Name: Peter
Surname: Snider
Sex: M
Birth: Bef 1750 in Pennsylvania
Death: Aft 1830 in Ross County, Ohio
Peter's surname is alternately spelled Snider, Snyder and even Snidow. In Virginia, Snider is most common. However, in Ohio the Snyder spelling seems more prevalent. In Ross County, Ohio, his wife and son are buried in the Snyder Family Cemetery, so that spelling is used here.
It is believed Peter was born in Maryland in about 1750. He and his wife, Sussanah, probably had at least ten children, but only seven have been identified by name. By about age fifty, Peter and his family had migrated to Botetourt County, Virginia. In 1810, he moved on to Ross County, Ohio, where he is believed to have died.
From Places Near the Mountains by Helen R. Prillaman:
"Peter Snider came to Botetourt County County from Washington County, Maryland. [He] came to the Daleville area of Botetourt County in the late 1700's and owned 730 acres of land" on Tinker Creek adjoining the land of John Noftsinger, The Glebe, John Neely and Jacob Gish. On October 24, 17 93, "Spessard, Eby and Waltmayer conveyed the 700 acres to Peter Snider. Snider had the land surveyed and granted November 14, 1799 as 730 acres."
Slowly, Peter gave or sold his 730 acres of land to various people. As for the land distribution:
When his daughter, Elizabeth, married, he conveyed to her husband, Christian Nininger, "for love of our daughter": 100 acres, 8 April 1800
When his daughter, Catherine, married, he conveyed to her husband, Christian Moomaw: 99 acres on Tinker Creek, 11 April 1804
He conveyed to Wilson Blount: 238 acres on Tinker Creek, 8 October 1807.
Peter conveyed to Christian Nininger: 74.5 acres, 21 July 1810
To his son, Peter Snider, Jr.: 204 acres, 1810
There are two entries for a Peter Snider in the 1810 US Census of Botetourt Co., VA. However, by this time Peter would have been about 60 years old, and neither enumeration seems to fit. The first Peter listed includes: Males 0-10 = 2, 26-45 = 1; Females 0-10 = 4, 26-45 = 1. This family seems to have too many children to be Peter Junior who was married in 1808. The second enumeration is more likely Peter Junior: Males 0-10 = 1, 16-26 = 1; Females 0-10 =1 ; 16-26 = 1. The families of Peter Senior's three known daughters are included separately in this census. There are two entries each for John Snider and David Snider, who could be his sons.
Perhaps Peter Senior moved to Ross County, OH, before the census was taken in Virginia and is therefore missing. According to Prillaman, he moved to Ross County, Ohio, on July 21, 1810. A Peter Snider is included in the 1810 Tax lists of Paint Township, Ross County, who might be him. At some point, the families of his daughter, Sophie Snider Moomaw, and her in-laws, as well as sons Peter Junior and David all made the move to Ross County. Peter purchased land in Paint Township adjacent to that of Sophie's father-in-law, John Moomaw. The families of his two older daughters remained behind in Virginia.
Peter's wife, Susannah, died in 1819. She is buried in the Snyder Family Cemetery in Paint Twp., Ross Co., OH. According to Ross County Marriage Records, a Peter Snider married Catherine Shobe on July 3, 1820. The 1820 US Census shows Peter living in Paint Township, over 45 years, with a 26-45 year old female, possibly his second wife, Catherine.
In 1828, Peter made out his will, listing his second wife and seven children: From "An Abstract of Wills Ross County, Ohio 1798-1848," #266, page 349, dated May 3, 1828 "No probate date set down"
"To wife Catherine but at her death to sons Peter and David and daus. Elizabeth, Catherine and Sophia
Sons John and Jona have had their shares. Wits: R. Hust on and John Pricer"
In the Federal Census of 1830, Peter is shown in Paint Township as being 80-90 years old with a 70-80 year-old woman. What became of Peter after that has not been researched. There is, however, a Peter Snyder, veteran of the Revolutionary War, buried in neighboring Highland County, Ohio.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Peter by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Peter:
