Biography

Children: Cornelis (Jan 7 1725), Dieuw (Sept 8 1726), Teet (1728, married Meindert Dirks Groen), Trijn (1730), Pietertien (1732, married Pieter Jacobsz Mantel).

It seems there was a Snijder family in Venhuizen. A Jan C. Snijder was made elder of the Venhuizen Reformed Church in 1704. And in 1713 Jan Jansz Snijder from Wervershoof transferred his membership to Venhuizen - the record says he came from Andijk. Perhaps his moving away gave our Jan a chance to take over his business as tailor.

I think the family lived in Wervershoof, but they may have lived in Onderdijk instead. Cornelis settled in Wervershoof. Both Teet and Pietertjen were working in Andijk when they were married, so Andijk is where they lived according to their marriage records.

Apparently the church in Wervershoof wasn’t very big at this point. There were only 4 children baptized in the entire year of 1728. Jan was from Lagedijk, part of Wervershoof. All the children were born in Wervershoof. Dieuwer was a widow when they married, and was from Wervershoof then. But there’s no earlier Wervershoof marriage listed for her, nor any earlier children.

Snijder is also spelled Snyder. It means “cutter” – although it was also often used in place of “Kleersnijder”, or tailor. Thus we could assume that someone in the family was a tailor. Since the last name is a profession, it could be that Jan himself was that tailor, he or his family changing their last name after they started working in the profession.

Although our Jan Klaasz isn’t labeled in the Wervershoof doopboek as Snijder, he appears in several other genealogies with this surname. And there was also a Jan Jans Snijder in the doopboek, having children in the 1690’s. Is he a relation? There was also a Jan Snijder in Schellingkout in the late 1600’s.[1]
