William was born about 1700. He was the son of John Snoddy.
It is not known when William arrived in Pennsylvania, but a great number of Scotch-Irish began arriving after 1719. William and his wife Mary Laird certainly arrived prior to 1737 since William Laird, William Snoddy's brother-in-law, made a deposition in 1779 stating when his father and his mother along with the younger members of their family came to America about 1737, they found William Snoddy had died and his widow was about to marry James Ireland. As soon as she wed James Ireland, the family came to help them transfer their goods up to where the former Snoddy lived . In doing so, they came upon twenty five acres of upland cleared and about seven acres of meadow ground.[1]
Later, a dispute concerning land ownership arose between Ireland and the heirs of William, but it was willed to William's children as stated in his last will and testament, and confirmed by John Snoddy's will[2] who died the following year. William Laird confirmed that he had "always heard it as the opinion of the people in that Neighbourhood that the place in dispute was the property of the heirs of William Snoddy, dec'd, & not of James Ireland".
William had two sons, James and John, and a daughter Jean. Both of his
sons died without marrying. His son James, who had been sickly for several years, lived until he was 27 and then died of consumption and John lived till he was bound an apprenticeship to learn the Art of Mill Wright, & died in his apprenticeship by the discharge of a gun.
