Biography

John P. Snow was born on November 26, 1790.[1] He later said that he was born in the new state of Georgia but there were no families named "Snow" on either the 1790, 1800, or 1810 US Census reports for Georgia. It's likely that he was actually born in either North or South Carolina, where several Snow families were established before 1790. John's parents are not known at this time.

The earliest US Census report of any Snow family living in Georgia was in 1820 when a "John P. Snow," was reported as Head of Household in Capt. Kimbrough's District, Greene County, Georgia. He was 25 to 40 years old [correct for a man born in 1790] and had a family that included a daughter under 5, another girl 20, perhaps a servant; a wife 25 to 40 and most-likely his widowed mother, over 45 years old. One of their closest neighbors was Samuel G. Snow's family; clearly John's brother as he was in the same age group with several minor children.[2] Another man, Thomas Snow, also lived in a different district of Greene County and four other "Snow" families [headed by Fountain, Mark, Richard & widow Sarah Snow] were reported in Jackson, Gwinnet, Wilkinson & Baldwin counties in 1820. It's not known if any were related to the 3 Snow families in Greene County.[3]

A family genealogy, based on local documents, states that John P. Snow married Susannah "Susie" E. Smith, b: Nov. 7, 1793, in Greene Co., Georgia. They married on January 24, 1819 in Greene County. The couple lived in Georgia and had 8 children:[4]

  1. Un-named daughter SNOW, b: 1819 in Greene Co., Georgia
  2. John W. SNOW b: 13 Sep. 1822 in Greene Co., Georgia
  3. Mary F. SNOW b: 1826 in Greene Co., Georgia
  4. Margaret M. SNOW b: 1828 in Greene Co., Georgia
  5. William T. SNOW b: 1830 in Clarke Co., Georgia
  6. Asbury D. SNOW b: 29 Nov. 1832 in Clarke Co., Georgia, USA
  7. Henry C. SNOW b: 4 July 1842 in Walton Co., Georgia, USA

John P. Snow and his family were recorded as living in Clarke County, Georgia, USA, on the 1830 US Census. [5]

On November 2, 1835, John P. Snow bought 60 acres of land along Robert's Creek in Clarke County, Georgia from Williamson R. Whitehead. About 6 years later, John P. Snow and his family moved west a few miles to neighboring Walton County, Georgia, where he established a grist-mill, called "Snow's Mill". John and his wife lived there until the end of their lives.

John P. Snow died in Snow's Mill, Walton, Georgia, on October 28, 1858. He was buried at the Mount Carmel Church Cemetery, Snows Mill, Walton County, Georgia, USA. [6] His wife, "Susie" E. (Smith) Snow, survived his passing for more than 2 more decades. She died on July 4, 1881, and was buried beside her husband at the Mount Carmel Church Cemetery, Snows Mill, Walton, Georgia, USA.[7]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

I have dived back in to looking at my Snow line through Samuel G Snow, my brick wall ancestor. I was looking at my and my father’s autosomal dna matches and my cousin matches that only share the snow surname. From this it indicates that possible brothers include Samuel G Snow (78 matches), John P Snow (11 matches), Jesse M Snow (1 match), and Thomas Snow (1 match). From what I can tell, most folks have entered John Snow and Mary Atwood as parents… which I feel confident false. There is a tree that I found through a tree connection to Jesse M Snow, possibly showing Moses Moran Snow and Sarah Henly being parents. Have you ever explored this possible relationship? I’m excellent on going on a wild goose chase these days, so if someone had already ruled this out… I wasn’t going to dig any further on this 😜
