Biography

Johannes Sommer, son of Christian Sommer and Barbara Garber, was born c. 1762 at Steinthal, Alsace (per his death record). His wife was Barbara Stocky, born c. 1763 at “Dawiller” (Thanweiler?), Alsace, daughter of Nicolas Stocky and Madelaine Zehntner (per Barbara’s death record).

Johannes Sommer had a sister Barbara, daughter of Christian Sommer and Barbara Gerber, b. 1765, d. 26 Nov. 1827 at Marcholsheim, Bas-Rhin, France, age 62; wife of Ulrich Zehntner, b. 1762/3 Honwald, Bas-Rhin, Alsace, France (son of Nikolas), d. 8 July 1835 Ribeauville, Bas-Rhin, France.[1]

In 1790 Johannes Sommer’s son Christan was born at Belmont, Bas-Rhin (per Christian Sommer’s marriage record).

Apparently in 1798 Johannes Sommer was 35 years old and living at Raon-sur-Plaine (per the 1798 marriage record of his brother Peter at Raon-sur-Plaine, inferred from Christensen).

In 1802 Johannes’s daughter Catharine was born at Selestat (per Catherine’s birth record).

In 1811 Johannes Sommer’s age was given as 49 years (per the 1811 Ribeauville marriage record of his brother Christian and/or the 1811 Ribeauville death record of his brother Joseph, inferred from Christiansen).

Johannes Sommer died 16 Aug. 1814 at Ribeauville (per death record).

Johannes Sommer’s widow Barbara and son Christian were living in Ribeauville in 1815, when son Christian married in Eckbolsheim (see below). Barbara Stocky, widow of Johannes Sommer, died 12 Aug. 1817 at Eckbolsheim, Bas-Rhin, France (per death record).

John Schmeeckle has a “Family Finder” DNA match (5th-8th cousins) with a person whose family tree is at http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/48586478/family/pedigree . This tree shows descent from a Christian Zendner, b. 1831 in Lorraine, France. This Christian Zendner appears on the following family tree: http://birkey.org/wc04/wc04_006.html , which shows that his grandfather Ulrich Zentner (1762-1835) married Barbara Sommer, sister of Johannes Sommer. Presumably Johannes Sommer’s wife Madelaine Zehntner was related to Ulrich’s Zehntner’s father Nicholas Zehender.

Children (son Christian and daughter Catharine are proven children of Johannes Sommer and Barbara Stocky by their marriage records; the other sons are listed as brothers of son Christian by Grubb):

1. John, b. c. 1787 (per father’s death record); m. Barbara King (per Grubb); in Butler Co. Ohio 1840 census; d. before 1850 when widow Barbara m. (2) Joseph Augspurger (per Grubb).

2. Christian, b. 4 Feb. 1790 Belmont, Alsace (per his marriage record), living at Ribeauville on 20 Dec. 1815 when he married at Eckbolsheim Madelaine Littweiler, widow of Jean Rupp of Eckbolsheim. She was born 21 Oct. 1777 at la Wantzenau, daughter of Samuel Littweiler, deceased and Barbe Littweiler (per marriage record). Christian Sommer of Eckbolsheim, age 28, notified the authorities of the death of his step-son Christian Rupp at Eckbolsheim on 24 Sept. 1817. Chretian Sommer of Eckbolsheim, Bas-Rhin emigrated to America 1 Mar. 1819, with wife and six children (per John Schunk, referring to the Alsace Emigration Index – LDS Film #1,125,006). Christian Sommer was one of the original Amish settlers in Butler County, Ohio in 1819) (per Grubb, who states that Christian moved son after to Dark Co., Ohio).

3. (presumably) Maria, b. 14 Feb. 1793, m. Christian Iutzi 11 May 1817; to Butler Co., Ohio (per Grubb, who doesn’t identify her parents).

4. Joseph, b. c. 1794 (per 1860 census), never married (per Grubb); living with nephew Christian Zimmerman at Butler Co., Ohio per 1860 census.

5. Peter, b. c. 1797; m. Anna Schlabach (per Grubb); in Montgomery Co., Ohio 1823, and to Butler Co., Ohio in 1839 (per History and Biographical Cyclopedia of Butler County, Ohio); in Butler Co. 1840 & 1850 & 1870 (census info provided by John Schunk).

6. David, b. c. 1801; m. Barbara Sloneker (per Grubb); in 1838 tax list Butler Co., Ohio; in 1840 and 1850 census in Milford Twp., Butler Co., Ohio (per John Schunk).

7. Catharine Barbara, b. 11 Mar. 1802 Selestat, Bas-Rhin, France; m. Christian Zimmermann; to Butler Co., Ohio 1836.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Johannes by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Johannes:
