After William died, Sarah remained in the
Tasman Street residence. Wises Directories
of 1880/81 and 1883/84 record “Sowman Mrs,
storekeeper, Tasman street, Nelson”.
In 1893 women “got the vote” for the first
time. The electoral roll of 1893 records Sarah,
Janetta (wife of Richard) and Maria (wife of
Charles) as well as Arthur, Charles Isaac and
Richard. Sarah’s occupation is listed as
“domestic duties” as are most other women
not in employment.
Sarah lived 23 years after William and
died in Tasman Street on 8 July 1894, aged 73.[1]

Records for Sarah's family in England variously record the family surname as Songer or Songar - the majority are spelt SONGER.
Marriage: Regd. Sudbury Registration District (Sep, 12, 643). Registered as William Sourman and Sarah Songar. Recorded as William Sowman and Sarah Songar on marriage certificate
Census: 1841 Sarah Songer (19) with her father Isaac Songer (50), an agricultural labourer, and her brother Charles (2) at Scotland Street, Stoke-By-Nayland.
