Roy was born in 1903 the sixth and last child of Edward Soper and Edith Lawrence. He married Ethel Ouida Lawrence in 1927 and they had six children: Daphne Irene, Dora May, Neita "June", Norma Doreen, Dallas Edward and Mavis.
