Joseph married Ann Virginia Pumphrey. In 1860, they were living in Prince Georges, Maryland.[1] By 1880, they had moved to Spaldings, Prince George's, Maryland.[2] Joseph now a widower was still there in 1900.[3] Two Barnes grandchildren were living with him.
When Joseph passed away, he was buried in the Saint Barnabas Church Cemetery in Temple Hills, Prince George's County, Maryland,.[4]
