Biography

Algernon, known as Algy, was the 4th son of Rowden Soper and Emily Wakefield Squire.

He was employed as a surveyor by Mr Parkinson of Takaka and was a member of the 10th Nelson Mounted Territorial for 2 years.

Algernon enlisted WWI, rank Trooper, serial no 7/272 with the Canterbury Mounted Rifles. In 1914 he embarked with his unit on the Athenic or Tahiti, October 16 1914 from Lyttleton to Suez, Eygpt.

Algernon was promoted to Sergeant in October 1916. He saw service in Cairo and Alexandria and was discharged from the army in September 1918 after 4 1/2 years service having suffered two injuries.

He arrived back to Nelson aboard the Nikau on 28 August 1918. [1]

Postwar, in 1921, Algernon now 31, married to Jean Winifred (Pixie) Vaughan, daughter of Albert and Maud Vaughan.

A very pretty wedding was solemnised at the. residence of Mr A. H. Vaughan, Waitapu, Takaka on the 20th September, when the Rev. E. Kedgeley united in matrimony Jean Winifred, fourth daughter of Mr and Mrs A. H. Vaughan, late of Dovedale to Algernon Leslie, fourth son of Mrs R. Soper, of Puramahoi. .. Her two bridesmaids were Misses Nita and Nancy Vaughan. .. Mr Gordon Soper supported the bridegroom as best, and Mr Eric Vaughan as groomsman.

They raised a family of 3 children in their marriage, Terence John 1922, Pixie Joan 1929 and Ramon David 1936. Sadly their first born son Terence, was killed in action in WWII at Malta in 1943. He worked for himself as a farmer at Puramahoi.

Algernon signed up in 1941 with the 7th Squadron IMR at Nelson, Army no 3/21/35. His discharge came in May 1943.

Algernon died in 1950, age 61 and is buried at Rototai cemetery.
