Biography

Walter Burrell Sorrells was born October 18, 1868 in Dallas County, Arkansas, the son of William Leander Sorrells and Elizabeth Lavonia Pryor.[1]

Walter's siblings, all born in Arkansas, were:[1][2][3]

  • George Lawrence Sorrells (b. abt. 1870)
  • John Knox Sorrells (b. abt. 1872)
  • James Byron Sorrells (b. abt. 1875)
  • Phillip Erwin Sorrells (b. abt. 1877)
  • Mary Adeline Sorrells (b. abt. 1879)
  • William Malcolm Sorrels (b. abt. 1881)
  • Robt Emery Sorrels (b. abt. 1884)
  • Lester Bradford Sorrels (b. abt. 1886)

In the 1880 U.S. Census, Walter was 11 years old, living with his parents, William and Elizabeth, and five other siblings in the Holly Springs Township of Dallas County, Arkansas, where William worked as a blacksmith. Living with them was William's 70 year old mother, Nancy Sorrells.[1]

Walter married Mary Arndel Henry on March 28, 1894 in Holly Springs Township. Walter was 25 years old, Mary was 21. The ceremony was performed by E.G. Wilson, Minister.[4][5]

The children of Walter and Mary, all born in Arkansas, were:[6][7]

  • Corine S. Sorrells (b. abt. 1895)
  • Lois Sorrells (b. abt. 1896)
  • James Henry Sorrells (b. abt. 1899)
  • William G. Sarrells (b. abt. 1903)
  • Walter E. Sarrells (b. abt. 1906)
  • Mary C. Sarrells (b. abt. 1911)

The 1900 U.S. Census listed Walter at 32 years of age, Mary at 28, with three young children, Corine at 5, Lois at 4, and James at 1 year old living in their own home in Dallas County where Walter worked as a salesman. Living next to them was the family of William and Virginia Henry, Mary's parents.[6]

The 1920 Census was mistakenly indexed to show the family name as Sarrells. Walter and Mary now had five of their children living with them at home in Ouachita County. Their oldest daughter Corine was now a school teacher and James, like his father was a salesman, quite possibly working together in a general store. Living with the family was Mary's 26 year old sister Lota Deere and a 2 year old Virginia D. Deere, presumed to be Lota's daughter.[7]

In the 1930 Census, the family name was once again mistakenly indexed, this time as Sarrello. Walter was now 62 years old living in a rented house at 216 Spring Street in Camden City, Arkansas with his wife and daughter Mary. Walter now worked as a cotton weigher. Living with the family was a 23 year old boarder, Myrtle Dickerson from Louisiana.[8]

Walter B. Sorrells died January 5, 1940 in Ouachita County, Arkansas and was buried at the Holly Springs Cemetery in Holly Springs, Dallas County, Arkansas.[9][10][11]
