Norah Tisdale
92, Moscow Artist
Norah Southon Tisdale, a resident of Moscow since 1947, died Monday, Oct. 28, at Good Samatan Village. She was 82.
Mrs. Tisdale, widow of Dr. E. W. Tisdale, longtime professor of range management at the University of Idaho, was a home-maker and artist, noted for her landscapes.
She was born Feb. 2, 1910, in Brandon, Manitoba, first child of Edgar Gilbert Southon and Anne Richardson Arnold Southon, Shortly after her birth, the family moved to Swift Current, Saskatchewan.
She graduated from high school in Swift Current in 1926, and earned a B.A. degree from the University of Saskatchewan in 1929. At the university, she was a member of the women's swim team and was, according to an admirer who attended the 60th reunion of her University of Saskatchewan class, "the prettiest girl on the Campus."
On June 11, 1936, she married Edwin W. Tisdale in Kamloops, British Columbia.
The couple helped to found the Kamloops Outdoor Club, and spent much of their leisure time hiking, camping and backpacking, They returned to Swift Current in 1941 and moved to Moscow in September 1947, when Dr. Tisdale joined the faculty of the Forestry School in the department of Range Management. In Moscow, Mrs. Tisdale pursued her long time love of art, studying at the University of Idaho with Mary Kirkwood and Arnold Westerlund. In 1960, she received a master of fine arts degree, and her paintings were frequently exhibited inthe Palouse region.
She was known for her skills as a needleworker and a house-wife, her love of the outdoors, of travel, of literature, music and theatre. She maintained a large correspondence with people who treasured her letters. She and her husband continued to camp, hike and backpack well into their retirement years, and travelled to many parts of the world, often with other family members.
Norah is survived by her son, Walter S. Tisdale (Edythe) of Idago Falls; her daughter, Julie T. Gerrard, of Seattle; four grandchildren, Ian Gerrard (Suzanne), Leah Gerrard (drew Middlebrooks), LeAnna Tisdale and David Tisdale (Melissa); and one great-grandchild, Brannan Tisdale. A brother, Arnold Southon, pre-deceased her in 1994.
Memorial services will take place at 3 pm Sunday, Nov. 10 at the Unitarian Universalist Church of the Palouse, in Moscow. Memorials may be made to the Nature Conservancy or the Moscow Public Library.
