Mary Ann Sowman (1855–1932), born 17 June 1855, was the first of William and Sarah’s children born in Nelson. She married Arthur Hunt on 18 September 1878 at her mother’s residence (William had died in 1871) in Tasman Street, Nelson. The ceremony was performed by the
Rev J. Beckenham.
Mary was a gentle person and popular with friends and relatives alike. She kept in contact with her sisters Sarah, Esther and Fanny, all of whom came to stay at Kaiapoi, and Adelaide, who lived in Christchurch. After Arthur died in 1927, Mary lived with a Miss Griffith in Kaiapoi, who cared for her until she died in 1932. Mary Ann and Arthur are both buried in the Anglican Cemetery,
Kaiapoi.[1]
