Interestingly, Gloriana was the name of a character in Edmund Spenser's poem The Faerie Queene - said to represent Queen Elizabeth I. It subsequently caught on with citizens and became a popular name used to reference and symbolize Elizabeth I. Written accounts reveal that the troops at Tilbury hailed her with cries of "Gloriana, Gloriana, Gloriana", after the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588. This is depicted in several modern-day movies that detail the life and times of this most royal Queen.
