Description
Some people enjoy the solemn and peaceful time when they go fishing along a river or lake. But fishing doesn't have to be a lonesome activity. At the turn of the century, enjoying the outdoors in the summer time might involve the whole family, the neighborhood or nearly the entire community. This was especially true on holidays, like this family party marking the 4th of July in 1901 in Manchester, Maryland. Young and old alike, thirty-two individuals, were out of their houses and away from chores for the whole day to enjoy nature, family, friends and good picnic food.
To truly mark the special day would be a photo of the group along with the first fish caught that day. Those honors belonged to the young boy front and center with pole and fish in hand. Another young man to the left proudly holds up the can of worms used to secure that fine fish. In the background, the men are holding up a large net, also used to acquire fish. In addition, notice the gentleman in the top left corner aiming a rifle. You wonder, was he just showing it off, planned on hunting later or ready to fire it off into the air in celebration of the holiday?
