Description
Bucephalus, whose name means "ox-head" in Greek, was the famous warhorse and animal companion of Alexander the Great, carrying his master to victory across Eurasia.
Alexander is said to have tamed Bucephalus in 344 B.C.E. as a boy of ten. His father Philip, impressed, awarded the horse to his son as a gift.
Apart from his legendary size, Bucephalus also sported a black coat, a large white star on his forehead, and a blue eye.
Bucephalus died at age 30 - an uncommon but not unheard-of lifespan for a horse - following injuries received during the Battle of Hydaspes. Alexander founded the city Bucephala on the bank of the Hydaspes River (thought to be the city of Jhelum in modern Pakistan), wishing to immortalize his faithful steed.
