Peck and Van Dalfsen's Furniture House located in Newburg, New York

  • It was on 17 May 1900 when the 6 story Peck and Van Dalfsen Furniture House caught fire and was burned to the ground. This is recorded in the New-York tribune. [volume] (New York [N.Y.]), 18 May 1900. Chronicling America: Historic American Newspapers. Lib. of Congress. The building was referred to as the Edgar Building that was located on 21 and 23 Water Street. The Peck and Val Dalfsen having moved to this location on 1 Mar 1895. The brave firemen attempted to put the fire out but were unsuccessful. Unfortunately this fire would claim the life of 30 year old Willis Meginn. He was attempting to put the fire out from the roof top when it collapsed trapping him inside the debris. It is reported that four other's were injured and taken the the New-Rochelle Hospital for treatment. The fire is estimated to have caused $50,000 to $60,000 with the insurance being carried had a value of $30,000.
