Description
CAPT. GROFF'S GUN AND BULLET
Souvenirs of war have been quite common for centuries and we are fortunate to have two such keepsakes in the family. They were from our gr. gr. grandfather, Capt. Joseph Groff of the 1st Potomac Home Brigade of Maryland from his Civil War service between 1861 and 1864. These artifacts are even more significant in that they serve as a reminder of his survival during the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863. Passed down through the Groff descendants was his Colt .44 Model 1860 Caliber Army revolver and the bullet that was retrieved from his foot when he was wounded on July 3rd at Gettysburg. That Rebel bullet remained in his foot for at least 36 hours before he could be treated by a doctor. He had continued with his duties and caring for his own men before being getting proper medical care.
Capt. Joseph Groff, returned to Frederick, MD and with his family owned and operated the Groff Hotel for several decades.
The revolver and bullet are currently under the protection of a gr. gr. grandson, John Thomas Routzahn, related to William Shelton Groff, Capt. Groff’s oldest son, who also served during the Civil War. They were handed down to him from Capt. Groff’s great grandson in the early 1980s.
