Introduction
From Wikipedia:Colorado in the American Civil War
The Colorado Territory was formally created in 1861 shortly before the bombardment of Fort Sumter sparked the American Civil War. Although sentiments were somewhat divided in the early days of the war, Colorado had only Union regiments.
Colorado was strategically important to both the Union and Confederacy because of the gold and silver mines there as both sides wanted to use the mineral wealth to help finance the war. [1]

County Resources
Although only one battle, the Sand Creek Massacre, occurred within the borders of Colorado, soldiers who enlisted in Colorado were assigned to other tasks during the Civil War. After the war, a number of veterans, both Union and Confederate, moved to Colorado from every state. To research these Civil War veterans, the best sources at the county level are probate files. The Colorado State Archives includes an online index of probate files for many counties. In addition, Colorado Historic Newspapers includes articles about Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) rosters and events. Some counties have Civil War memorials, erected by the G.A.R. The G.A.R. in Colorado included members who fought for the Confederacy. This might have been true especially of the smaller towns.
