Description
Franklin is located in Venango County.
Its history dates back to colonial times. The area was originally Fort Venango built by the British in 1760. When it was later taken over by the American colonists in 1787 it was renamed Fort Franklin for Benjamin Franklin.
Andrew Ellicott, who would survey the Washington, D.C. site plan, laid out the town site of 1,000 acres that was to be designated Franklin by 1795.
In the 1800s, the town of Franklin and surrounding areas became the center for worldwide oil production.
