Description
Franklin, Massachusetts, the town is 35 miles southwest of Boston, Mass. In 2005, it had a population of about 30,000 people.
It was named for Ben Franklin in 1786, one year before Franklin, PA was so named. Ben showed his appreciation of the honor by sending the town a library of 116 volumes which formed the nucleus of "America's First Public Library", located in Franklin, Mass.
When straw hats and bonnets were popular in the 19th century and early 20th century, the town of Franklin was the major manufacturer of straw hats and bonnets.
