It originated at Arthur Guinness' brewery in Dublin, Ireland (St. James Gate) and stems from the porter style that originated in London in the early 18th century. The unique and very distinctive flavor of GUINNESS comes from the unfermented roasted barley.
Guinness Timeline
- 1759: Arthur Guinness signs a 9,000 year lease for the unused brewery at St. James Gateway in Dublin, Ireland. Begins brewing ale.
- 1769: Guinness exports for the first time - six and a half barrels shipped to England.
- 1899: Guinness breweries pioneers several quality control efforts - hiring the statistician William Sealy Gosset who came to fame under the pseudonym "Student".
- 1974: Guinness brews the last porter.
- 1986: Guinness acquires the Distillers Company.
- 1997: Guinness merges with Grand Metropolitan forming Diageo plc.
