Hempel Name Origins

The HEMPEL name is from middle Europe. This includes Germany, Poland and surrounding countries. The earliest Hempel line I have found was in Poland where a General Jan Marian Hempel served under Napoleon. The photo is of Jan Marian Hempel. This copy was given me by a young Hempel who believes he is descended from the General. He like many others has his brick wall.

Origins and Destinations

1 Origin of First Group was from Poland (Info Pending)

2 Group # 2 of these origins is Wends from Kohlwesa, Germany

2 This group went to World's End, SA, Australia.

3 Group # 3 from Elgershausen and Hoof Germany

3 Their destination was Grassyville, Bastrop County, Texas, United States of America.

4 We have recently encountered a group in London, England. More later on this group.

5 This group is in the area known as Silesia. Silesia Silesia is a region of Central Europe located mostly in Poland, with small parts in the Czech Republic and Germany. Its area is about 40,000 km², and its population about 8,000,000. Silesia is located along the Oder river. It consists of Lower Silesia and Upper Silesia. en.wikipedia.org This group went to Canada.

Early Settlements

They migrated to countries such as the USA, Canada and Australia, just to name a few. The Wendish group were in Germany and spread to the above countries with a Johann Hempel meeting the group when they arrived. I can find no proof pro or con that it was the same Johann Hempel. A Johann Hempel is listed with the group, but was not on the ships arrival listing. Many of the Hempel used Johann as the first name with the next or middle name indicating the person. The Johann was dropped in many cases although a middle name of John was not uncommon. In my Hempel research I have encountered many groups of Hempels coming across Europe going from East to West. A complete listing of the Hempel descendants is in the Polish Hempel History Book. (in Polish) Dates are not included, but current names, occupations and destinations are included. I received the list and some pictorial history of the Hempels in Poland. A gap in the history was from a political change in government. Usually those of the old government and their families and supporters fled for their lives. Before that no one can be sure at this time.

"Big Guns of Fayette" page 76 tells an interesting story of one CSA member, it lists; Hempel, E. `The muster roll of Captain L Alexander's company, Texas volunteers, Fayette County Texas, November 4, 1861. Lists Hempel as 3rd Corporal, age 26 years. born about 1838 in unknown location) : For some reason I wrote in the margin; died 30 April 1864 (also on this page is Hempel, L; no data on his parents or birth. )

On pages 45-46. `Nor were these the only deserters to add shame to the record of the company at this time. E Hempel (born about 1838 in unknown location) : who had enlisted in the service at LaGrange, Texas, May 10, 1862, then was assigned to company "A" 3rd Regiment Texas Infantry and later transferred into Creuzbaur's company, tired of the service early in 1864 and deserted. His wanderings took him to the horse camp in Montgomery County, and with the camp, he went to Austin county,. His petty depredations led him to Frelsburg. In the northern part of Colorado County, He killed a farmer and later was caught and hanged on April 30th

I'm posting this so everyone will know. There are links throughout the space pages for anyone to join. IT Reads "TO JOIN..." Listed in multiple space pages and in multiple times on each page. I have sent out emails to all name managers of Hempel, Hampel, Hampl and a few others. Our goal of finding the Hempel Name source is a long way off, but we have found many locations they went to. A list of those locations is at the top of each space page. Look at these lists. If you know more email me and I will add them.

We have over 400 names on the Hempel Name Study category pages as of now, but a small amount from what I've seen on My Heritage sites. Keep adding both members and Hempel names. Thanks Jon Corrected typos on Dec 27, 2017. Jon

I will make this one short. Thanks to a drawing on Wikitree during the Source a tron, I won a full subscription to My Heritage. In doing so, added 2 new members to Hempel Name Study and a world of ancestors. Also a large number of Hempel researchers. I will invite as I gain their email addresses.

"But my Mother was XXXXX" "But he was married to my Mother""No, His wife was XXXX"

When you hear these words what do you do to find the man's real spouse(s)? This is actually the problem I had with George john Hempel. My Grandfather had been the Administer of his estate. Well, I was able to find his probate which was helpful, but the real clue was the cemetery.

His 1st wife was buried in the plot next to him. The 2nd spouse was buried next to her parents. The 3rd spouse it turned was a widow and we found her next to her children in another cemetery.

This is showing you the value of the cemetery project and a one name study. It took 2 cemeteries to locate these burials. Research on the Hempel name to answer this. Extra research gave me that he was my 1st cousin 3 times removed. Join the Hempel Name Study and the Cemeteries Projects.

Much of my family is from Elgershausen, Germany. They came to Grassyville, Bastrop County, Texas, USA. Hello Everyone,

A brief self-introduction. I'm from South Australia. My paternal grandmother, Edith, was a Hempel. Our branch of the Hempel family arrived in Australia in 1850. They were Wends and came from a small village in Saxony named Kohlwesa.

Being close to Bartlett, the burial place of my Parents, my Grandparents and so many Aunts and Uncles has enriched my Hempel research.

You might say I got the Hempel bug. I even did a telephone book search in phone books of New York City and hit dirt. A lonely young man (Hempel) lost in the big city FAR away from home. He was from Poland. Just before the wall came down he gave me a listing of Hempel descendants from Poland and the fact that his Father was co-authoring a book about the Polish Hempel line. Although in Polish this young man provided me with a picture of the cover page, the ISBN, the pictures of his military ancestors. That was the last I heard from him. The wall came down about the same time his Father died and this young man went back to Poland.

My biggest memory was finding the resting place of my 2nd Great Grandfather Johann Hermann Hempel at Grassyville Cemetery and making connection with the Cemetery Association. Meeting my Almost Cousin Marcella Chapple was a wonderful event. Being related to all my cousins herself she led me on the path into Hempel research. We are not actually cousins, but one marriage away.

Her ancestor was married twice, once that connected to my line and once connecting to hers. She and I are related to the same people, just not to each other (yet). Way back in her ancestry there is a Marie Hempel. Anyway Grassyville has been the key to finding my 2nd Great GrandFather, several Great Grand Aunts and Uncles and a world of Hempel cousins.

Hope it is quiet on this comment board because nobody has a brick wall.

If you have one, why not join a team for the Source-a-Thon and perhaps. With the team resources, you might find a source to break down that wall. Jon P. Czarowitz

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Texas, United States of America. I miss hearing from you and your research progress.

My Hempel research has taken me thru the years of Saxony, Germany. Mine don't seem to have wandered as the younger generations have. What about you? Can you tell when they started a migration pattern? Come by and let us know something of your family line(s). Have a Happy Holiday Season. Jon Czarowitz

I am afraid I am running out of steam. My line goes back into Germany to the 1700's. Beyond that I can;t trace with the hardware and software I have.

I know the line in Poland might have extended beyond that, but can't trace it there. The Slavic line is sure to connect between these 2 lines. Other branches though small are sure to connect these main branches, but to date they seem to run along the west to east routes and end in the United States of America. Some then go from there to Australia and other mire unsettled regions where land has opened up. I don't plan to run off, but I need you to do updates so we can continue. I take this opportunity to ask each of you to come by the website and give an update of where you stand on your Hempel Research.

This will give an ensight as what and where to go next. Perhaps giving your oldest Hempel and their location will help. One goal was to find where he Hempel name came from. Sincerely Jon P Czarowitz Czarowitz-1
