Description
The USS Hornet was the ship used to implement the Doolittle Raid.
The raid, retaliation for Japan's attack of Pearl Harbor was the first time bombers were launched from a carrier for a combat mission. Brave men and a leader that was willing to take huge risks -- James Doolittle -- were instrumental in this groundbreaking attack.
At 809 feet, the Hornet was built in Newport News, Virginia, and was first commissioned into action in 1941. The ship was deployed to the Pacific and launched 16 bombers in an attack against Japan.
The strike, though not causing significant damage, was meant as a morale boost to the US at a time when it was badly needed. This was a time of uncertainty on many fronts. It was previously believed that neither the US or Japan would be vulnerable to air attacks on their own lands. Both were proven wrong.
The brave men who gave their lives to this mission are remembered as heroes who gave everything for their country.
