Origins of the Surname Langston

The word "lang" meaning long, or in this context probably tall, and "stan", a prominent stone, so used as a county or parish boundary marker.

Many villages were named Langeston in medieval documents.

It can also be used as a "from an area" name given to a person who had left their original village to move somewhere else, and was most easily identified by being called by the place name.

In October 4, 1555, the name John Langston was recorded in London.
