About

This free space page for Lindenwood Cemetery is part of WikiTree's Cemeterist Project, and was created to document the life and times of our ancestors that are interred there.

If you would like to photograph this cemetery, you can upload the photos to The Vault and I will add them to the appropriate section table. Just put your name, date, and the section of the marker in the comment section.

If you make a profile or know of existing Wikitree profiles for people buried in Lindenwood, let me know, and I will connect the profile to the table. This project is all about documenting the lives of the people buried here. It is an enormous task, but tasks like this are well suited to the group power and collaboration of a Wiki. Your input would be greatly appreciated.

History

The scenic rolling hills of Lindenwood Cemetery were originally covered with linden trees which gave the cemetery its name. Lindenwood Cemetery was created in July 1859 on land that had been purchased from the Potawatomi Indians. It opened to the public on May 30, 1860. The entrance to the cemetery was completed in 1884. Most of Fort Wayne's Founding Fathers are buried at Lindenwood as well as hundreds of Civil War soldiers. There are over 69,000 interments on 175 acres making it one of the largest cemeteries in Indiana.[1]
