Description

Maniac Magee Theme: Racial Prejudice

Jeffrey Lionel Magee is a 12-year-old homeless wanderer who earns the name "Maniac" with such feats as intercepting a football on a field of players twice his size, and hitting homeruns from a "killer" pitcher. As the legend of Maniac spreads, Jeffrey finds himself facing two problems: in many situations he is confronted by bullies, and he is caught up in the strong racial divisions in Two Mills.

Question 1 Mrs. Beale

Pg. 48 Sometimes Mrs. Beale would poke her head in and stare: one little black girl, one little black boy, one medium white boy. And she would smile and wag her head and sigh: "Never saw such a tub.

======================================= 1. On page 48 Mrs. Beale says, she "never saw such as tub" when Maniac was taking a bath with the twins. Why do you think that she has never seen a a tub like that before? Does the sight make her upset or does she enjoy it? Explain.================================ 2. Look at the following picture of a fish and its belly. Explain why you believe "fishbelly" is used as a negative term in Maniac Magee. (look on p. 36, 62-63 to see when it is said in the book, think about how a fish might feel or smell, the color of the belly, etc...)================================================3. Prejudice is a dominant theme in Maniac Magee, and an issue that we deal with in the world today. Why do you think prejudice occurs (is it fear, ignorance, becasue of our country's history, or a combination)? What can we do to become a unified community, in our school, in our neighborhoods, and in our country?
