Origins of the Surname Percy

The renowned family of Percy, of Northumberland, England, derived their name from Percy Forest, in the Province of Maen, Normandy, whence they came, which signifies 'a stony place, from pierre'. It may signify a hunting place, from pirsen, Teutonic, to hunt; percer, French, to penetrate, to force one's way. Old French perce(r) ‘to pierce or breach’ + haie ‘hedge’, ‘enclosure’, referring to a soldier in his breach of a fortification.

Geographic Centers of Percy Families

In the UK, most people lived in Northumberland and Lancashire Counties. Also found in Lanarkshire in Scotland. Most being farmers.

In the USA, many live in Michigan, New York, Texas and California.
