This is a list of historical place names. The list is organized by the Current Country Name, and then an alpha list of historical places and the year first named. Please add to this list so that we can copy and paste the location name in our profiles.

The format is historical place name followed by the start year for that name. Place Names that no longer exist should probably be listed as Current Name (Extinct Name) year so the name alpha sorts with the new name. For ex.: Kirkwood (Young America Village), Warren County, Illinois c1855

The introduction to "Heads of Families at the First Census, 1790" defines the states and their authorities then and in a few later years. Wikipedia is an excellent source, as you pointed out, particularly its coverage of the 13 original colonies, as well as the other 13 that ocmprised the British colonies in the 1660s, including Florida. The definitvie umbrella term, British America, is a good one to use on WikiTree, as well as the Northwest, Southwest and Florida Territories. New England is also one title illlustrated by Wikipedia (by Benj. Franklin?) But I guess we're a long way from standard references that could be used in WikiTree. Quentin Smith
