England, mid-12th century.
Surname Meaning
This is a royal family name (i.e., the House of Plantagenet) founded by Henry II of England, son of Geoffrey V of Anjou. Geoffrey was nicknamed Plante Genest, meaning 'hairy broom shoot.'
The reason behind Geoffrey's nickname is uncertain - he may have worn a sprig of broom, or used a broom to lash himself, or the name may be related to an earlier name of 'Plantapilosa' (more information [http://www.plant-fhg.org.uk/plantagenet.html here).
