Templeton DNA Name Study for Northern Iredell County, North Carolina - SNP R-L473. ISOGG has L743 the my most downstream SNP which is by definition the haplogroup (hG). However, as noted, Private Surname SNPs like L743 are in the rare category and not generally recognized outside of the old Scot Modal Cluster (present day L1065}. S764 which ISOGG recently added to their phylogenetic tree is becoming recognized within the R-L21 macro-haplogroup.

Since there are so many newly discovered SNPs/haplogroups, I recommend (If possible) a 3 tiered hG definition using “common” SNP variations which clearly defines the hG “cradle”. For example:

INTRODUCTION

Three types of DNA tests are used to accomplish the Study Objective:

YDNA STR (37, 67 or 111 marker)

Y-STRs are taken specifically from the male Y chromosome. They are only found in males & are only passed down, mostly unchanged , by the father to son in a male-male-male pattern. They are typically used in paternal lineage genealogical studies.

AutosomalDNA (AtDNA) Tests

With autosomal tests. each person tested receives half of their AtDNA from each parent who in turn got half from each of their parents. Thus each child receives "approximately" 25% of their AtDNA from each of their four grandparents, 12.5% from each of their great grandparents, etc, etc. This pattern continues so that each child receives a portion of the AtDNA from every ancestral generation of every surname lineage.

YDNA SNP Tests

Y-SNP tests define major branches on the human paternal family tree. The Manager of the Templeton-134 tree participated in SNP research which discovered his branch on the human paternal tree. This branch is designated R-L743. Subsequent SNP tests by numerous Templetons & non-Templetons determined that only descendants of the patriarch of the Templeton-134 tree tested positive for this SNP.

Use of DNA Tests

By Others

STR tests can be used by other Templetons to approximate a close genetic relationship with L-743 Templetons. If they find a close relationship as defined by familytreedna.com, it is recommended that they take a special L743 test @ $39.

It is emphasized that there are at least 3 different genetic Templeton lineages none of which has a close genetic relationship with another. The SNP-L743s have a Scot ancestry; SNP-M322’s have a Scotch-Irish ancestry & an SNP-I2a’s have Viking ancestry.

By L743 Templetons

STR tests are not used in the “Templeton DNA-Name Study”

AtDNA tests are used to designate all descendants of a member of the Templeton-134 tree identified as the common ancestor of two members of the Templeton-234 (who took the AtDNA tests) as genetically confirmed descendants of that common ancestor.

SNP tests are used to designate all ancestors of a member of the Templeton-134 tree (who tested positive for SNP R-L743) as genetically confirmed descendants of the patriarch of the L743 tree.
