Townsend was established in 1732. It is part of Middlesex County, Mass, in the center of the state.

It was named after Viscount Charles Townshend, a British cabinet minister. Around 1780, residents and town officials began to spell Townsend by omitting the "H", so it remained from then on.

In its early years, its main business centered around coopering.
