Wild West



During the time of the Old West or the Wild Wild West , thousands of pioneers made their way westward in search of land, better lives, gold, and sometimes, to escape the law. Geographically, the Old West applies to those states west of the Mississippi River.

Some of the profiles that fall into the Wild Wild West Project are Lawman, Bounty Hunters, Outlaws, Gunfighters, soiled Doves, Wild West Shows, Performers and Entertainers, and Trick Shooters. This includes anyone that would be listed in Wikipedia or known in popular culture, made significant contributions to the Wild West, or held a position of acknowledged local prominence in the Wild Wild West. These individuals are often referred to as legends. This project also includes the many thousands of every day Americans who were part of the Wild Wild West as defined by time and geographic location.

Trick Shooters of the Wild West



The most famous trick or exhibition shooter was Annie Oakley. She toured with Buffalo Bill's Wild West show. She used handguns, rifles, and shotguns, although Annie Oakley preferred to shoot with the .22 caliber rifle.

  • Calamity Jane - was born Martha Jane Cannary. She was an American frontier woman and professional scout, known for being an acquaintance of Wild Bill Hickok and for fighting Indians. She showed a lot of kindness and compassion, to the sick and needy.
  • May Lillie - was an American sharpshooter and an expert horse rider. She was known as the "Champion Girl Horseback Shot of the West", in her husband's Pawnee Bill's Wild West Show.
  • Kitty Leroy - was a gambler, saloon owner, prostitute and trick shooter of the Old West.
  • Annie Oakley - was born Phoebe Ann Mosey. She was an American sharpshooter and exhibition shooter. She had a starring role in Buffalo Bill's Wild West show.
  • Lillian Smith - Lillian Smith was a young trick shooter and trick rider. She joined Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show in 1886, at the age of fifteen. She was a rival of Annie Oakley in the show.


Soiled Doves of the Wild West


Prostitutes of the Wild West were also called painted ladies, soiled doves, women of the night, red light ladies, and public women.

  • Laura Bullion - was a prostitute and a female outlaw of the Old West. She was a member of Butch Cassidy's Wild Bunch gang. They called her Della Rose and Rose of the Wild Bunch.
  • Pearl de Vere - was a prostitute and brothel madam of the American Old West. She was known as the soiled dove of Cripple Creek (in Colorado).
  • Pearl Hart - was an outlaw of the American Old West. She ran a tent brothel in Mammoth, Arizona, in 1898. She committed the last stagecoach robbery in the United States and was the only woman ever recorded as having committed that crime.
  • Josephine Hensley - was an American prostitute, madam, and owner of brothels, dance halls, a variety theater, and saloons in Helena, Montana. She was known as Chicago Joe Hensley after her marriage to James T. Hensley.
  • Kitty Leroy - was a gambler, saloon owner, prostitute and trick shooter of the Old West.
  • Fannie Porter - was a well known madam of the 19th century. She is best known for her popular brothel in San Antonio, Texas. She also associated with famous outlaws of the day.
  • Mary Thompson - was known as Squirrel Tooth Alice because of the gap in her teeth, she was a dance hall girl, prostitute and Madam.

Wild West Shows, Performers and Entertainers


Wild West Shows traveled in the United States and Europe. The first wild west show was Buffalo Bill's, which started in 1883 and lasted until 1913. The shows introduced many western performers and personalities, cowboys, Indians, wild animals, outlaws, and stagecoaches and trick performers.The shows also performed reenactments of battle scenes, western scenes, and hunts.

  • William Carver - was known as Doc Carver he was a sharpshooter, and creator of a popular diving horse attraction. He went into partnership with Buffalo Bill Cody. Their wild west show “Wild West - Hon. W. F. Cody and Dr. W. F. Carver’s Rocky Mountain and Prairie Exhibition” lasted one season.
  • William Cody - was an American scout, bison hunter, and showman.
  • Gordon Lillie - was known as Pawnee Bill. He was an American showman whose specialty was Wild West shows. He was known for his partnership with Buffalo Bill. They joined their two Wild West shows, and the show became Buffalo Bill's Wild West and Pawnee Bill's Great Far East.
  • May Lillie - was an American sharpshooter and a expert horse rider, she was known as the "Champion Girl Horseback Shot of the West". She was part of her husband's Pawnee Bill's Wild West Show.

  • Cole Younger - was an outlaw and one of the leaders of the James - Younger Gang. Later in life Cole Younger and Frank James toured in a wild west show - The Great Cole Younger and Frank James Historical Wild West Show.


Lawmen of the Wild Wild West


Most of the Old West lawmen were honorable and heroic figures, but many of them rode both sides of the fence and can be found in both Lawman and Outlaw lists .

  • Chalk Beeson - Sheriff of Ford County (Dodge City), Kansas, owner of the Long Branch and Saratoga Saloons, rancher, state legislator and founder of the famed Dodge City Cowboy Band.
  • Frank Dalton - was a Deputy US Marshal of the Old West, he was the older brother to the members of the Dalton Gang, he was also the brother of William M. Dalton, once a member of the California legislature, who became an outlaw and leader of the Doolin Dalton gang alongside Bill Doolin.
  • Morgan Earp - was the younger brother of Deputy U.S. Marshals, Virgil and Wyatt Earp. Morgan was a deputy of Virgil's at the time of the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral.
  • Virgil Earp - was a veteran of the American Civil War and was a Deputy U.S. Marshal for south-eastern Arizona Territory and Tombstone City Marshal at the time of the gunfight at the O.K. Corral, in October 1881.
  • Wyatt Earp - was an American gambler, Pima County, Arizona, Deputy Sheriff, and Deputy Town Marshal in Tombstone, Arizona. He took part in the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral.
  • Robert Fly - was a Captain of the Texas Rangers, He was elected Sheriff of Cotulla, LaSalle County November 2, 1886.
  • Pat Garrett - was an American Buffalo Hunter, lawman, Customs Agent and bartender in the old West. He became famous for killing Billy the Kid.
  • James Hickok - was known as Wild Bill Hickok he was Lawman, gunfighter and a gambler.
  • Doc Holliday - was an American old West gambler, gunfighter, and dentist. He is remembered for his friendship with Wyatt Earp and the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral
  • Tom Horn - was an American Old West lawman, scout, soldier, hired gunman, detective, outlaw and assassin.He was hanged in Cheyenne, Wyoming,on November 20, 1903 for the murder of Willie Nickel.
  • Bat Masterson - was an American wild west buffalo hunter, U.S. Marshal and Sheriff, United States Army Scout, and a gambler.
  • Edward Masterson- was a lawman and the brother of the American West lawmen and gunfighters Bat Masterson and James Masterson.
  • James Masterson - was a lawman and the brother of the American West lawmen and gunfighters Bat Masterson and Edward Masterson.
  • Perry Owens - was an American Cowboy, lawman and gunfighter of the Old West. He was known for the Owens-Blevins Shootout in Arizona Territory during the Pleasant Valley War.
  • Allan Pinkerton - created the Pinkerton National Detective Agency.In 1861–1862 he stopped an assassination plot while protecting Abraham Lincoln.He was also a spy for the Union Army in the American Civil War.
  • Frank Phillips - was a deputy sheriff and freelance gunman who single-handedly went into West Virginia, captured a jailfull of Hat-fields, and almost caused a war between Kentucky and West Virginia.
  • Bass Reeves - was one of the first African Americans to receive a commission as a Deputy U.S. Marshal west of the Mississippi River. During his time as a Deputy U.S. Marshal he arrested 3,000 outlaws and killed 14 men.
  • Ben Thompson - was a contemporary of "Buffalo" Bill Cody, Bat Masterson, John Wesley Hardin and "Wild Bill" Hickock, some of whom considered him a friend, others an enemy.
  • Paden Tolbert - was a US Marshall he worked with Bud Ledbetter, Heck Thomas and Bill Tilghman and other famous names of the time. He and his brother John Tolbert were both Deputy Marshals under "The Hanging Judge", Isaac Parker.
  • Kate Warne - was the first female detective in the United States. She worked for the Pinkerton National Detective Agency.
  • Jake Teeter - was a constable of Truckee, California in the High Sierra, killed in a saloon shootout with rival lawman Jim Reed.


Bounty Hunters of the Old West


A bounty hunter captures fugitives for a monetary reward or bounty. Sometimes, a person is referred to as a bounty killer if a murder is required to collect the bounty.

  • Elf Dunn - was one of the Dunn Brothers. They were five brothers from Pawnee, Oklahoma, who worked as Old West bounty hunters. They are best known for having killed George "Bittercreek" Newcomb and Charley Pierce, who were both members of the Wild Bunch.

There were a vast number of outlaws in the old west,a large number ran with gangs like the James Gang, Billy the Kid's Gang, the Doolin-Dalton Gang, the Wild Bunch and dozens of others that ruled the Wild West.

  • Ann Bassett - was also known as Queen Ann Bassett. She was a female rancher and cattle rustler of the Wild West. She and her sister Josie Bassett, were associates of outlaws, mainly Butch Cassidy's Wild Bunch. Ann is also thought to have been Etta Place, the girlfriend of the Sundance Kidd.
  • William Bonney - was known as Billy the Kid, he was an outlaw and gunman in the old west. According to legend, he killed 21 men, but it is believed that he killed 8 people.
  • Henry Bullion - was a Native American outlaw who robbed banks. He was acquainted with outlaws William Carver "News Carver" and Ben Kilpatrick "The Tall Texan. His daughter, Laura, was a prostitute and an outlaw. She was a member of Butch Cassidy's Wild Bunch gang.
  • Laura Bullion - was a prostitute and a female outlaw of the Old West. She was a member of Butch Cassidy's Wild Bunch gang, they called her Della Rose and Rose of the Wild Bunch.
  • Bill Dalton - was an American outlaw in the American Old West. He was the co-leader of the Wild Bunch gang and he was the brother of the founders of the Dalton Gang.
  • Bob Dalton - was an American outlaw in the American Old West. He was a member of the Dalton Gang.
  • Emmett Dalton - was an American outlaw, train robber and member of the Dalton Gang in the American Old West. After a long prison sentence he became an author and an actor in Hollywood.
  • Grat Dalton - was an American outlaw in the American Old West. He was leader of the Dalton Gang. He died during a raid on a bank in Coffeyville, Kansas.
  • Rose Dunn - was known as Rose of the Cimarron. She was best known for her romantic involvement with outlaw George Bittercreek Newcomb, when she was a teenager. Rose's five brothers were the Dunn Brothers who were a group of brothers from Pawnee, Oklahoma, who worked as Old West bounty hunters.
  • Charles Ford - was an outlaw, and member of the James Gang. He was the lesser known brother of Robert Ford, the killer of Jesse James.
  • Robert Ford - was an American outlaw best known for killing his gang leader, Jesse James, in 1882.
  • John Wesley Hardin - was an an American outlaw and gunfighter of the Old West. John Hardin had at least one encounter with the famous lawman "Wild Bill" Hickok.
  • Pearl Hart - was an outlaw of the American Old West. She ran a tent Brothel in Mammoth, Arizona in 1898. She committed the last stagecoach robbery in the United States, and was the only woman ever recorded as having committed that crime.
  • Frank James - was a Confederate soldier, guerrilla and outlaw. He was the older brother of outlaw Jesse James and was also part of the James-Younger gang.
  • Jesse James - was an American outlaw, gang leader, bank robber, train robber, and murderer from the state of Missouri and the most famous member of the James-Younger Gang.
  • Jim Reed - was the first husband of the notorious American outlaw Belle Starr. He was also a friend of Belle Starr's second husband, horse thief Tom Starr. Jim was a cattle rustler, outlaw and bootlegger. He rode with the Younger Gang.
  • Belle Starr - was an American outlaw convicted of horse theft in 1883. Her mother was related to the Hatfields of the feuding Hatfields and McCoys. Belle was associated with Jesse and Frank James and Cole, Bob, Jim and John Younger the James-Younger gang.
  • Sam Starr - was a Cherokee Indian, he was the second husband of the notorious American outlaw Belle Starr. He was a cattle rustler, outlaw, gun fighter and bootlegger.
  • William Thompson - was known as Texas Billy. He was a gambler and gunman and the brother of more famous Ben Thompson.
  • Ella Watson - was known as Cattle Kate, an outlaw of the Old West. Ella was not violent and was never charged with any crime during her life. Accused of cattle rustling, she and her partner, Jim Averell, were both lynched .
  • Cole Younger - was an American Confederate guerrilla during the American Civil War and later a leader with the James-Younger gang. He was the eldest brother of Jim, John and Bob Younger.
