On August 16, 1920, in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan, Charles married Mary Pearl Gregory.

In 1930, Charles worked as an organizer for the Ku Klu Klan (KKK) in Detroit. According to a January 1930 article in the Detroit Free Press, Charles was "the exalted cyclops of Wayne County Klan No. 68, and grand kaliph of the Ku Klux Klan of Michigan."

According to the 1940 U.S. Federal Census, Charles had completed four years of high school and was employed as an investigator with the prosecutor's office.

Charles died on December 24,1957. He was interred at Brookside Cemetery, in Charlevoix, Charlevoix County, Michigan.
