Biography

Charles Joseph Spare was born circa April 2, 1901, in Covington, Kenton County, Kentucky, to Alice Kidwell and Joseph J. Spare. [1] [2]

On August 16, 1920, in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan, Charles married Mary Pearl Gregory. [3]

In 1930, Charles worked as an organizer for the Ku Klu Klan (KKK) in Detroit. According to a January 1930 article in the Detroit Free Press, Charles was "the exalted cyclops of Wayne County Klan No. 68, and grand kaliph of the Ku Klux Klan of Michigan." [4] [5]

According to the 1940 U.S. Federal Census, Charles had completed four years of high school and was employed as an investigator with the prosecutor's office. [6]

Charles died on December 24,1957. He was interred at Brookside Cemetery, in Charlevoix, Charlevoix County, Michigan. [2]

I have a copy of the application for a military marker for Charles Spare, documenting his date of birth, date of death and place of interment, however am having repeated problems uploading the image. I'll try again later.
